Election Day
I am in a Methodist church today. It is an election day and I am a commissioner. This church is a polling place.
This place has seen better days. It has a swimming pool. Polls have been open for four hours. We have logged forty votes. We have ten hours to go.
What are we voting for?
Clerk of Criminal Court. For some reason, this is the person who runs elections in Louisiana. I am sure they do other things but I have no idea what they are. I don’t know why we elect this position.
There are a number of spending proposals on the ballot. The city wants its citizens to authorize more borrowing.
I get paid to do this. It isn’t much.
There are five of us here. It is going to be a long day. This is democracy in action.

Long may it wave! That photo of the orphans is absolutely haunting.
