There is a stretch of North Carrollton Avenue called Little Metairie. Metairie is Jefferson Parish. It is the part of Jefferson Parish you think of when you think of Jefferson Parish, i.e.: all of it.
Little Metairie looks like Metairie. There is ample free parking in Little Metairie. It is just like the real Metairie.
Winn Dixie and Rouse's, the two supermarkets, one on either side of Carrollton Avenue. The streetcar runs between them.
The sushi at Winn Dixie tastes very fishy. Some people say that is a sign of quality. They are beef people.
The sushi at Rouses’ is better. Everyone agrees. Rouses’ is across the street. It is the local supermarket chain. Winn Dixie is the regional chain.
Walmart and Costco are the national supermarket chains in New Orleans. Neither is in Little Metairie. Nothing is far in New Orleans. Costco is a mile away as the pelican flies.
Costco has the nearest hotdog that is already cooked, though both Winn Dixie and Rouse's are well stocked with hot dogs and all the fixings. You will just have to do all the work for yourself. It will also cost more than $1.50. You will have have eight with quarter-full condiment jars.
The surrounding neighborhoods are pleasantly walkable. It is not uncommon to see people on the streets, running errands or taking exercise, or both if walking a dog.
Depending on which side of Carrollton Avenue a person lives on, that determines which supermarket they patronize. Those who live lakeside of Carrollton are Winn Dixie people. Rouse's people live on the riverside of Carrollton Avenue.
[Publishers note: This magnum opus about Little Metairie goes on for pages and pages and pages. It explores all sorts of topics peculiar to this stretch of Carrollton Avenue but universal in their application to New Orleans as a whole. I will be sharing one page a day, probably for the next two weeks.
Paid subscribers will get the entirety. Free subscribers will get little snippets, dribs and drabs, now and then.
You really should be a paid subscriber. Try a month. It will be seven dollars well spent.]
Sounds good. My old stomping grounds. We were Rouse’s people generally.
