New Orleans Syrup. Chapter 516.
Plato on the youth in a democracy (Plato and Bloom, 1991, p. 240. My translation):
...he lives along day-by-day, gratifying the desire that occurs to him; at one time drinking and listening to the flute, at another time drinking water and reducing, now, he is practicing gymnastics, and, again, idling and neglecting everything. Sometime, he spent his time as if he were occupied by philosophy.
Plato, he was a philosopher himself, you know, he describes the youth in a democracy like somebody I know who is an older gentlemen in a democracy. Cry no tears for the Rhinestone Dandy.
Someone asked me today if I have ever been studied, like by a team of scientists, or the anthropology department at the local community college. Why, yes, I have. I am often studied by dumbstruck poets and lovestruck women.
For some reason, I am thinking about Mrs. Peel. I have a feeling that we are needed.
Now, I am going to talk about something else.
I will see you behind the paywall.
