Skunk Ape (con't)
The town of Pearl River, Louisiana is located 39 miles from New Orleans, close to the Mississppi border. Honey Island is located one mile east of this town of 2000 people. Since there are no public accommodations in Pearl River, Prof. Lovejoy would rent a car and stay in nearby Picayune, Mississippi. Honey Island lies between the two.
Honey Island Swamp is located within a larger area administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The swamp is surrounded by hardwood forest, the most common tree being the tupelo, which makes up about a third of the overgrowth. In the middle of the swamp, is Honey Island, so named because someone once saw a beehive on the island. The beehive is no longer there.
Though only about one mile from the town of Pearl River, Honey Island remains untouched. The area is frequented by fishermen, crawfishmen, hunters and trappers.
